Skin Types and Skin Care Tips

What's my skin type?

Acne breakouts are not just for teenagers, so determining your skin type is important to having healthy-looking skin everyday. Here's some tips for normal, dry, sensitive, oily, combination, and mature skin types.
The T-zone is the area of the face that includes the forehead, nose, mouth, and chin. With some faces, the T-zone is different from the cheeks and the area around the eyes, such as combination dry and combination oily skin.
T-zone

Normal Skin seems balanced throughout most of the face-- not too oily or dry. May feel a little oily in the nose area by the end of the day. Breakouts are rare. Dehydration and a lackluster appearance are primary concerns.
Recommended soaps: All soaps may be used with this skin type.

Dry / Sensitive Skin feels tight and dehydrated over the entire face, with no oily sheen, a lackluster appearance and a tendency towards flaking and fine lines. Mature skin or skin that shows signs of premature aging may fall into this category.

Combination Dry Skin feels normal in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), but tight and dry in patches, generally in the cheek and eye areas. Dehydration and signs of premature again are of concern, particularly around the eyes.

Combination Oily Skin is oily through the T-zone and normal throughout the cheeks and around eyes. Avoiding blemishes and clogged pores and controlling excess oil in key areas are the main focus.

Oily Skin produces excess oil throughout the entire face, particularly through the T-zone, which can look shiny after cleansing. Blemishes and clogged pores are common problems. Balancing the skin without stripping its natural moisture is very important.

Mature Skin is a more elegant way to refer to aging skin. Naturally, the oilier your skin, the longer it takes for the effects of aging to appear. This skin type is characterized by the appearance of fine line or wrinkles. Skin may start to show spots, appear thinner, or start to lose tone.

We live in the infomercial era. As vulnerable consumers, we are lead to believe that something is wrong with us if we don't resemble a celebrity or supermodel, but that there is something we can buy to fix whatever is "wrong" with us. And worldwide, there are probably over 10,000 skin care companies trying to convince us that we need a different cream for each body part -- from our pinky toes to our upper lip. But hey, we're not saying these skin care products are total hogwash and that you should stop using them stat, we're just saying that less really is more, and if you want to keep it simple, you can by ditching superfluous products and just using a few key items.

See the unnecessary skin care products now.

We gave dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer a ring to help us figure out which skin care products (general product types, not necessarily specific products) for our face or body are totally unnecessary. With so many gimmicky things out there, we should at least be able to knock a few off our list, right?

Other than just buying and using his entire line (kidding), Lancer says that what most people really need is a good face and body wash and moisturizing sunblock -- that's it. In fact, he says that the method of how you use a skin care product is actually more important than the actual product.

OK, are you ready to simplify your beauty life? Then, check out these unnecessary skin care products.
